“Wantpower” Fuels “Willpower”

“The secret to willpower is what someone once called wantpower.

People who want something enough usually find the willpower to achieve it.”

- John Maxwell

Willpower is the force that allows us to deliberately push through something … to make the extra effort to “make it happen” … to overcome procrastination and get “it” done. Willpower catalyzes action and serves us well when we need to call upon it. Willpower, however, is not limitless; it’s great when we happen to have sufficient reserves of it, but once we exhaust those reserves, it loses its punch and we buckle under the pressure of other things that call upon our time, our energy, and our focus.

The real secret to sustainable willpower is to couple it with what leadership guru and author, John Maxwell, refers to as “wantpower.” When we truly want or desire something strongly enough, and we have a clear and compelling “why” for that desire, our willpower is amplified and we can dig deep beyond our reserves to go all in to make something happen.

What do you want?

Are your goals in alignment with your wants and desires?

Get clear on your wants and your heart’s desires. Set measurable goals to move in the direction of achieving those things. Then … allow the magic of “wantpower” to fuel the actions you need to take, to overcome the obstacles in your way, to seek and acquire the resources you need, and to take the day-to-day, week-to-week actions to achieve them.

What are you willing to “go all-in for?”
