Sculpting Your Year

"Every block of stone has a statue inside it,
and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it.”
~ Michelangelo
Most people approach a new year like they’re ADDING something... More goals. More habits. More commitments. More noise.
But sculpture works the opposite way.
A sculptor doesn’t add... A sculptor REMOVES.
You already have the block. Your time, habits, routines, meetings, relationships, obligations, and commitments—that’s the raw material. The question isn’t what more should I add this year?
The better question is: WHAT NEEDS TO GO?
Consider this your sculpting process:
START WITH THE FULL BLOCK
Everything you currently do—work, personal, social, digital, mental.
IDENTIFY WHAT NO LONGER SERVES YOU
Activities that drain energy
Commitments made out of obligation
Meetings that don’t move the needle
Habits that don’t align with who you want to be
REMOVE WITH INTENTION
Not recklessly. Not emotionally.
Strategically. Thoughtfully. Deliberately.
ALIGN WHAT REMAINS WITH YOUR GOALS
If it doesn’t support your health, relationships, growth, impact, or purpose—it’s excess material.
PROTECT THE EMERGING FORM
White space isn’t empty—it’s STRUCTURE.
Boundaries aren’t limitations—they’re DESIGN CHOICES.
When the unnecessary is stripped away, what remains is clarity. When clarity remains, EXCELLENCE becomes possible.
You don’t need a new life this year. You need a REFINED one.
CALL TO ACTION
This week, ask yourself one powerful question:
“WHAT IS ONE THING I CAN REMOVE THAT WOULD IMMEDIATELY MAKE MY LIFE BETTER?”
Then pick up the chisel. Remove it. And let the best version of this year emerge.
NOTE: If this article resonates with you, I highly recommend the book "Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less" by Greg McKeown as a resource to "sculpt" back to what is truly essential in your life.
